Karl Hofmann: Strength in Numbers/Trust The Future

February 5 - 26, 2011 // Generator, Albuquerque, NM

The title of the exhibition, Strength In Numbers/Trust The Future reflects a formal logic that holds that if an element can connect to the larger whole, than it can be used, but that the connections-both figuratively and literally-must hold or you have collapse. The more inclusive the composition is in terms of elements, the more points of connection you have to use and on and on... and if the connections are solid, you build strength.

The installation at Generator for me is a formal rumination on the Future...of culture, of Art, of human existence. Intellectually, I am not alone in acknowledging deep uncertainty about the future challenges humans face but the spirit of Strength In Numbers is about having faith in the frenetic and creative side of the human condition and to paraphrase Louis Nevelson to "give a second, spiritual existence to other people's shit."
