Uncommon Connections: Danny Crump, Terrence Campagna, Karl Hofmann
July 23 - August 23, 2011 // Da Wang Culture Highland, Luohu District, Shenzhen, China(from Press Release)
For their exhibition at the Da Wang Culture Highland, American artists Terrence Campagna, Danny Crump and Karl Hofmann will present three installations composed of throw-away materials collected in the art factory town of Da Fen.
During their residency the artists made several collection trips in Da Fen. For these artists, the trips were not only a source of materials, but also served as ruminations on their understanding of contemporary China. Trips to collect material were opportunities for cultural exchange, but the artists could only speculate on the thoughts of shopkeepers who expressed bewilderment at the the Americans' interest in their trash piles.
At the DWCH the artists concentrated on finding new directions for the cast-off material. They created their work both individually and in collaboration, but the ubiquity of the material blurs the lines between the artists. Displayed in the enclosed glass of building F, the exhibition offers unique vantage points to contemplate the work, and invites viewers to imagine new possibilities for interacting with our global consumer culture.
